Black Hills Energy Consolidates Workspace

Chynna Lockett

Black Hills Energy is opening a new headquarters in Rapid City. The building has the capacity to house more than 700 employees.

Employees from four former Black Hills Energy Rapid City locations are relocating to the new building. David Emery is the CEO of the company. He says nearly 550 current employees are in the process of moving to the new space.

“Obviously having everyone under one roof is very beneficial. Five different locations-despite all the technology, communication, collaboration--all those things are challenging. With everyone under a single roof, a lot of those issues just go away.”

Black Hills Energy has more than one million natural gas and energy customers in 8 states. Most of the corporate employees are located in Rapid City. Emery says the new headquarters gives the company flexibility to open more positions. He says more than 50 employees have been hired since construction began.

“Those are jobs that we already made the decision really makes sense to be here now. Over time I think as we have turnover, as we have changes in job function, things like that. Well gradually continue to migrate some jobs here. Not a lot at any given point in time.”

The company plans on hiring more employees early next year as construction continues on the new building.
