A measure that automatically allows South Dakota’s home schooled students to participate in public extracurricular activities is dead. A legislative committee considered House Bill 1123 for nearly two hours Monday before decided not to support it.

Annual Statewide Poetry Contest Deadline December 1st

The state poetry society is holding its annual contest. Writers across South Dakota are encouraged to submit.  The South Dakota State Poetry Society was founded in 1927.  It includes a range of writers and poets from across the state.  

Brad Soule  is a retired physician who now manages the annual poetry contest.

Dr. John Barlow is a 2016 inductee to the South Dakota Hall of Fame. His work as a scientist, scholar and teacher helped distinguish him as a South Dakota leader who exemplifies a "culture of excellence."

Dr. Barlow joins Dakota Midday for a conversation about collaboration, inspiration, and the evolution of medical care in the state. Dr. Barlow is joined by Dr. Richard Gowen, Chair of the board of the South Dakota Hall of Fame.

A measure that allows lawmakers to review the South Dakota High School Activities Association’s social policy is dead. Some legislators support House Bill 1111 as a means to regulate issues related to transgender students among other matters. The argument on the bill in committee centered on the whether the activities association qualifies as a state agency.
