The past three weeks have been chaotic and upsetting for many South Dakotans. Today we're spending the hour focused on student-athletes and sports in the state.  Dan Swartos, Executive Director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association. He joins us to recap how the coronavirus pandemic has changed the game and how we might move forward in the best way possible under the circumstances.

It was announced today that the state high school boy's and girl's basketball tournaments are postponed due to the COVID 19 outbreak.

South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem gave an executive order for all schools to close for deep cleaning.

SD Schools Agree With Transgender Student Sports Policy

A recent poll shows about 80 percent of schools in the state support the current guidelines for transgender student athletes. Currently, students who want to participate in a sport as a gender other than that assigned at birth have to get permission through the South Dakota High School Activities Association. 

 

SDHSAA Has A New Executive Director

Dan Swartos is the new executive director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association. Swartos is currently the superintendent for the McCook Central School District. He replaces Wayne Carney as SDHSAA Executive Director this summer.

Swartos says the new job is a bit intimidating. He says even though he has big shoes to fill, Carney is going to work with him to make sure the transition runs smoothly.
