South Dakota Focus: 2022 Statehouse Analysis and Discussion

Join South Dakota Focus, Thursday, January 27, at 8pm (7 MT) on SDPB1 and SDPB.org for analysis and discussion of current legislation coming from the 2022 statehouse session in Pierre.

SDPB’s political reporter Lee Strubinger will bring us an up to the minute update from Pierre including discussion of SB 46, the latest bill seeking to block transgender girls from competing in girls sports in South Dakota. Committee testimony on both sides of the debate argue Title IX is in their favor.  University of Sioux Falls Associate Professor of Criminal Justice Mike Thompson, J.D., helps explain Title IX and what has yet to be legally determined for athletes who are transgender.

Our live guest this week will be Representative Tamara St. John. Representative St. John is the new chair of the State-Tribal Relations committee. She discusses updates on last year’s legislation to create a liaison to investigate missing and murdered Indigenous people in the attorney general’s office

We also explore how Governor Noem’s “Moment of Silence” legislation was defeated this week. Governor Noem brought a bill to mandate a moment of silence each day in South Dakota schools, during which students could meditate or pray.  Despite applause for the measure during her state of the state address, the House Education Committee voted against the bill after extensive opponent testimony

In our “Why is That? “ segment, Seth Tupper looks into the odd history of Bingo tax in South Dakota, and why the governor wants to end it.
