From to-go containers for take-out to single-use grocery bags, plastic use has surged during the pandemic. Studies show a little more than eight percent of plastics are recycled and more than 26 million tons of plastic waste ends up in landfills. Those statistics are from 2017, before the pandemic. What if we can do better in our plastic production? Researchers at South Dakota State University are working on extracting cellulose for cornstalks to create strong and biodegradable products.
