RCPD Respond To Active Shooter Call At Mall

Every available police officer responded to an active shooter report at the Rushmore Mall in Rapid City yesterday/Sunday. The mall went into lockdown after a man in a mask reportedly threatened to shoot people in the parking lot. Brendyn Medina is the community relations officer for the police department. He says the suspect didn’t have a gun, but he did have a warrant out for his arrest and was in possession of a controlled substance.

“Based on the information that we were given, we had a very swift response to the location and the amount of effort that we put into working with the mall as well as our other law enforcement officers in the area proved to be highly effective in this given circumstance.”

There were no injuries or fatalities during the incident. Medina says the Rapid City Police Department does active shooter training with local businesses to prepare for these situations.
