Civic Center building permit largest in city history

Rushmore Plaza Civic Center

Rapid City is issuing a $111.5 million building permit to build the new Rushmore Plaza Civic Center.

This permit is the largest ever issued in the City.

Craig Baltzer is the Executive Director of the Civic Center. He said this project will help the Black Hills economy.

"With Mt. Rushmore right up the road, we have the ability to track people from farther away who say, “let’s go see that concert in Rapid City and while we’re there, spend some time in the Black Hills.” Baltzer said. "So, the Civic Center has always been a tool to capture that, and with the new arena, we’d be able to capture even more.”

The City’s previous record for a single permit was issued to expand Regional Hospital in 2018.

The new Civic Center is expected to be completed in the fall of 2021.
