Tribes Gather To Honor Ancestors Who Signed Treaties In Fort Laramie

Members from 15 different tribes across the plains region are honoring the spirit of their ancestors. One hundred and fifty years ago many tribes gathered to sign the 1868 Treaty Of Fort Laramie.

It’s not the only treaty signed between the US government and tribes in that area that’s being remembered.

The commemoration began as horseback riders from several tribes arrived at the historic site.

Over the course of the four-day commemoration, tribes are sharing their stories and their way of life, while acknowledging the complexity of intentions behind signing or not signing the treaty.
