The South Dakota Art Museum invites you to experience "Primordial Shift: The Art of Michael Meilahn" a captivating exhibition of numerous large-scale works by the renowned glass artist, Michael "Mick" Meilahn. The monumental title installation features 32 hand-blown glass ears of corn, each around four to six feet tall, which are suspended from the Museum’s ceiling on cast bronze and blown glass stalks. The ears of corn and are illuminated by a video and audio projection of the artist’s family farm.
An artist and farmer, Meilahn learned glassmaking as a university student in Wisconsin in the 1970s and subsequently participated in the wave that became the American Studio Glass Movement. Through his work, Meilhan crafts a visual dialogue about the genetic modification of corn that invites reflection on humanity's evolving relationship with nature and the intricate interplay of science, agriculture and art.

Termes was raised in Spearfish, received his bachelor’s degree in education from Black Hills State University and began a career as an educator. It was during this period that Termes discovered his passion for sharing ideas. Eventually he decided to pursue his own art full-time and in 1992, he opened the Termesphere Gallery just outside of Spearfish that has been visited by thousands of art enthusiasts from around the globe.
You can also enter the world of Termes through a virtual reality experience, which will be available for use in-person.
Helene Duhamel hosts the final Turtle Soup of the Spring 2024 season. Her presentation will cover The Duhamel Trading Post.Turtle Soup is a weekly lunch and learn program with revolving topics ranging from Indigenous Games of the Midwest presented by Travis Brave Heart to Art & Engineering being presented by Jon Keller of South Dakota Mines. Each presentation starts with lunch being served at 11:45 PM, followed by a presentation at 12 PM. The local non-profit Fork Real Café partners with The Journey Museum & Learning Center to provide two weekly varieties of soup including a vegetarian option. Immediately following the presentation, a discussion will be held regarding that topic.
The Wildwoods are an enchanting Folk/Americana trio based in Lincoln, Nebraska, whose flowing songwriting tandem has been praised by Paste Magazine as "focused and charmingly human". The Wildwoods' delicate melodies and descriptive lyrics come from nature, love, experiences from the road, and growing up in Nebraska.
In 2016, 2017, 2018, 2021, and 2022 The Wildwoods were nominated by the Omaha Arts and Entertainment Awards as a top Americana/Folk artist in Nebraska, and in 2022 they were named “Best Band” by the Lincoln Journal Star’s ‘Lincoln’s Choice Awards’. The group’s musical momentum continues into 2023 by placing as a top 3 finalist, with more than 1,000 submissions from around the world, in the Gems in The Rough contest, hosted by popular YouTube channel GemsOnVHS. The band’s most recent release, Foxfield St. John (February 2023), has cultivated a sophisticated and captivating sound to their well-crafted songs and musicianship.
Comprised of husband and wife team Noah (guitar) and Chloe Gose (violin), as well as Andrew Vaggalis (bass), The Wildwoods draw inspiration from a wide range of influences including the styles of: Watchhouse, The Decemberists, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Peter, Paul, & Mary, Nickel Creek, Joni Mitchell, and Gregory Alan Isakov. The folk/Americana trio work to harmoniously and delicately blend their voices to create a sound so nostalgic that you may find yourself dreaming and longing for those sweet memories from your former days.

“Preserving War Stories" by David Hosmer
The public is invited to the Mead Museum's monthly "Feed Your Mind" on Friday, May 3rd from noon-1pm. David Hosmer, Yankton native and former City Attorney, has spent over a decade recording stories from United States Military veterans.
Hosmer will talk about how his oral history project started and what he's learned from speaking to the individuals. He has collected over 150 stories from local and area World War II and Korean War veterans; and as of 2022 has been gathering verbal history from Vietnam-era veterans.
Feed Your Minds are held on the first Friday of each month, and there is a free-will donation to attend. The one-hour event will be held on the second floor of the Mead Building, 82 Mickelson Drive, Yankton, SD 57078.
Join us for Downtown Art Walks! Every first Friday (June through September) from 5–8 PM. In this self-guided art experience, participants will explore interactive artistic activities at each of the businesses they stop at along the way. From live music and poetry readings to workshops and painting – you won’t want to miss it!
Simply start at any of the 17 destinations on the map on First Fridays to join in on some creative fun. If you’d like to walk to the next location to experience the next business’s pop-up event, do! Each of the participating businesses will be open from 5 to 8 PM.

Now is the time to get into step with the Prom through the Decades Dance, Friday, May 3. Join us as we dance to live music on the spacious hardwood-floored ballroom of the El Riad Shrine in downtown Sioux Falls. All are welcome to celebrate the spring prom season with us. The evening begins at 6:45 with a beginner dance lesson, free with admission to the dance, taught by instructor Lisa Myhre. Open dancing to music performed by the 17-piece El Riad Big Band begins at 7:30. There will be a variety of music suited to your favorite dances; including swing, ballroom, two-step, and Latin dancing styles. And there will be opportunities for instruction in other partnered dances throughout the evening. During band breaks there will be opportunities to participate in popular line dances such as the Electric Slide, Shivers, and Fireball. Come wearing your favorite dressy, casual, or vintage prom inspired attire. There is ample free parking on the street and in the large lot on the east side of the El Riad.
