The Black Hills Ski Season Is Finally Upon Us

Terry Peak Facebook

Black Hills ski bums can finally unite this weekend at Terry Peak.

The northern hills ski area’s opening day is this Saturday.

Terry Peak is the only one of two ski areas that will open this year.

Those patiently waiting for skiing and snowboarding season to start shall wait no longer, but they’ll have limited options this season.

One of the two ski areas in the Black Hills is closed this year.

Mystic Miner at Deer Mountain was sold during a sheriff’s sale earlier this year and is closed for the season.

Warm weather delayed opening day at Terry Peak, and despite some warm weather this week, the ski area will open.

Linda Derosier is the marketing director for Terry Peak. She says a limited number of runs are available to ski.

“We’ve only had measurable snow. We’re at 24 inches, but half of that had occurred at the beginning of November, which did melt away toward the end of the month,” Derosier says. “Then, we had a little bit of snow last week. The temperatures, we’ve been battling warm temperatures and that makes it very difficult to make much snow.”

Derosier says they’ll need a little more time to make snow for the rest of the mountain. She says she expects plenty of snow and colder weather in the beginning of 2018.

Derosier says Terry Peak will offer discounted lift tickets if any runs are closed.
