SDPB sports voice puts the mic down

Chris Laughery

The interview posted above is from SDPB's daily public affairs show, In the Moment with Lori Walsh.

Mike began broadcasting in the fall of 1976 on the 10 watt station at Dana College in Blair Nebraska.

It was something he had wanted to do since he was 9 or 10 years old. He spent hours as a kid listening to sports broadcasts and rock and roll radio from across the midwest. He transferred to Augustana in Sioux Falls in the fall of 1978, and has been here ever since.

Commercial jobs included stops in Gregory, Madison, Vermillion and Mitchell. He finally got a job at KELO-AM in 1988 after emceeing an amateur comedy night at a bar in Sioux Falls. He ended up doing morning radio there and was part of the top rated show in the market.

While he had done sports at every stop in some form or another. he became a "sports only" guy in 2001. He and Craig Mattick began the first 2 hour daily sports talk show in the state on KWSN. He has also hosted a long form interview show on numerous radio stations, and did TV broadcasts of sports for several outlets. He is probably best known for the 20 years he has spent doing play by play of state high school championships on SDPB. He is also an author, having written 3 books, with more on the way.
