Lake Mitchell dredge vote slated for June 2024

South Dakota State University

June 4: 2024: that’s the date Mitchell voters will vote on a $25 million loan to fund a dredge of Lake Mitchell.

Last month, a council vote to set that date drew sparks on the timeframe.

This week, advocates again pushed for a vote in November, arguing delaying the vote until next year could be harmful to the lake.

Council member Marty Barrington stood by his guns, pushing for an earlier election.

“So, I’ve taken a look at all the negatives and positives – there’s so many positives to a Nov. 7 election – for us in city council and for the community to speak up and tell us what they want. I don’t see any positives for waiting until June," Barrington said. "I have a tough time figuring out what are the positives of a June election.”

Despite those concerns, the same 5-3 vote scheduled the election for June 2024.
