Rounds returns to Washington, D.C., after wife's death

U.S. Sen. Mike Rounds is back in the nation's capital following the death of his wife earlier this month.

Jean Rounds died from an aggressive form of cancer. The former South Dakota first lady had been battling cancer since 2019. She was 65.

In a video on Twitter, Rounds says he's thankful for the support to him and his family.

"It's been a very difficult couple of weeks," Rounds said. "Certainly, as all of you know, life moves forward and she's in a much better place. We're back to work in Washington and it's different. Nobody to really text back home to say I've made it or anything like that. Nonetheless, this is where our work is at right now."

Rounds says several items are in the forefront in Washington.

He says he's watching the National Defense Authorization Act. He says there are several items in it he thinks should become law.

Rounds says Congress will also look at passing a continuing resolution to fund the federal government, as well as looking at increasing the debt ceiling.
