Recapping Gov. Noem’s State of the State address

On today's show...
SDPB’s Lee Strubinger brings us a summary and analysis of Gov. Kristi Noem’s State of the State address.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley has released his 2024 legislative priority package. We discuss a few of those bills, including one that would criminalize the use and possession of xylazine, a horse tranquilizer.

We dive into the governor’s State of the State speech with Jon Hunter, our Dakota Political Junkie. He also shares what he expects this session from the state’s Republicans and Democrats.

Then we’ll circle back to Jackley’s proposed xylazine bill. The drug is used by veterinarians on livestock like horses and cattle. We check in on the bill’s potential impacts with state veterinarian Beth Thompson.

Plus, we’ll hear about the effects of a piece of legislation from the 2023 session. Last year, the statehouse passed a law banning gender-affirming care for transgender youth.

We ask Elizabeth Broekemeier, a South Dakota parent of a transgender teen, how that impacted her family.
