Ban on gender-affirming care for trans youth now in effect

A bill prohibiting gender-affirming care for transgender youth in South Dakota went into effect on July 1.

House Bill 1080 bans puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones and gender-transitioning surgery for minors.

The bill states that if a medical professional violates the law, the board must revoke the health care professional’s license.

Supporters say the bill protects children. Opponents say it’s discriminatory and violates the doctor-patient relationship.

At least 19 other states have passed similar laws restricting medical care for transgender minors.
