Three South Dakota properties are being added to the National Register of Historic Places.
The properties are the Doland Commercial Historic District, Jefferson School in Huron, and the Midland Depot.
Sofia Mattesini is the Northern Historic Preservation Specialist for the South Dakota State Historical Society. She said that preserving these historic places in beneficial for South Dakota communities.
"A lot of communities identify their community significance with their historic buildings," Mattesini said. "It offers financial incentives to property owners as well that can apply for a variety of programs in order to preserve these buildings, and make sure that federal and state development can’t demolish these buildings without taking into consideration the fact that they’re listed.”
There are different criteria for registration applicants to meet, including sites of historical events, residencies of notable people and architectural significance.
The Historic District in Doland was added for its importance as the commercial hub of the surrounding agricultural area. Jefferson School is listed for its educational significance, and the Midland Depot is listed for its significance in transportation architecture.
