The Pfizer vaccine can soon go to teenagers who are 12 to 15 years old. The FDA is expected to make that announcement later this week.
The vaccine manufacturer did a trial similar to the process for the adult vaccinations. The two-month program was required by the FDA.
Dr. Susan Hoover of Sanford Health specializes in infectious diseases and travel medicine. She says parents should ask their doctors about potential vaccine options for their children.
“As parents, we try to keep our household safe, keep our kids safe. But kids are having contact with the outside world. And if there’s enough COVID circulating in the community, even having vaccinated parents is not going to be enough to protect that child.”
Hoover says the new vaccine option could open up more opportunities for families going forward.
More than 100 million adults have been vaccinated in the US in the past five months.
