The Department of Health’s new program, Naloxone for Businesses, will give South Dakota businesses access to Narcan, a medication that reverses opioid overdoses.

As part of the program, the DOH is providing training on how to identify signs of an overdose and administer the drug.

State lawmakers passed House Bill 1162 last session, which lets businesses have Narcan on site. It allows employees to administer the drug in the event of an overdose, without being held liable if anything goes wrong.

Officials encourage businesses to routinely check their Narcan supply to replace it once it is used or has expired.
