Sanford to stop pursuing embattled Fairview Health merger

Sanford Health

The Sanford Health-Fairview Health merger has fallen through.

Sanford announced Thursday they would cease the merger process with the Minneapolis-based health network.

In a statement, Sanford CEO Bill Gassen blames a lack of support from “certain Minnesota stakeholders,” for the decision to pull out of the merger.

Those stakeholders would be the University of Minnesota system and the state Attorney General. Both opposed the merger and provided major roadblocks throughout the process.

“This is the right decision for our patients and residents, our people and the communities we serve,” Gassen said. “We remain committed to providing world-class care to patients across our footprint. We are extremely grateful for the support we have received from many Minnesotans who share our vision to invest in health care delivery and enhance access to care in both rural and urban areas.”

This is the second failed merger between the two health systems. They previously attempted to consolidate in 2013.
