Brookings resumes Urban Forest Initiative

The City of Brookings is launching its annual tree planting incentive program for residents who want to add a tree to their property.

The Urban Forest Initiative offers reimbursements of up to $125 of the total cost a resident pays to plant a tree.

City officials said the program has added over 400 trees to the city since the program began in 2021.

Joshua Bauman is the Brookings Assistant Director of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry.

“The trees planted through this program will help preserve our community’s urban forest for generations to come," said Bauman.

Trees can be planted in front or back yards and boulevards. People interested in planting on a boulevard are asked to contact Parks, Recreation, and Forestry Department for approval.

Once the tree is purchased and planted, residents can bring their receipt to Brookings Parks, Recreation, and Forestry office for reimbursement.

The city is investing $30,000 in the Urban Forest Initiative this year with reimbursements given on a first-come, first-served basis. Reimbursements are limited to one tree per property each year.

To participate in the city’s program the tree must be purchased from a certified list and be purchased after April 22.
