Expanding educational opportunities through virtual reality

Young Ae Kim
/
University of South Dakota

This interview originally aired on "In the Moment" on SDPB Radio.

What is the latest in student learning? Virtual reality.

The University of South Dakota's art department installed the region's first virtual and augmented reality lab. The high-tech space allows students to learn and develop graphic design concepts and marketing strategies in virtual environments.

Professor Young Ae Kim, Ph.D., graphic design program coordinator at USD, and Master of Fine Arts student Marianna Astete explain how the technology is being utilized by students in the art department and beyond.

While the technology used in the virtual reality lab was first pioneered by gaming companies, it is now increasingly used in business, health care and education. Future collaborations are on the horizon with USD's School of Business, Department of Psychology and the Department of Computer Science.
