The Transportation Security Administration intercepted a loaded firearm from a passenger’s carry-on bag at the Sioux Falls Regional Airport.

The X-ray screen showed the handgun during routine security on Tuesday. The Minnehaha County Sheriff’s Office and Sioux Falls Police were alerted and confiscated the weapon, according to TSA.

This incident is the fourth firearm found in the Sioux Falls Regional Airport this year. The TSA said nine firearms were detected at the airport in 2022.

Recently, TSA updated the penalties for bringing a weapon to an airport. They are a fine of up to $14,950 and the revocation of TSA PreCheck eligibility for a minimum of five years.

“We encourage all travelers to know the exact location of their firearm at all times and to pack their luggage starting with a completely empty bag to ensure no prohibited items are accidentally brought to the checkpoint,” Acting South Dakota TSA Federal Security Director David Durgan said in a press release.

Passengers can travel with a firearm, but it needs to remain in checked baggage and unloaded. Ammunition needs to be packed separately in a locked hardback case. Upon check-in, it should also be made known to the airline. Laws vary by state.
