Mitchell is incentivizing professionals from around the world to join its community.

The Michell Area Development Corporation is offering money to individuals willing to relocate to the city for a full-time job.

The “Move to Mitchell” program is on its second round, offering a $1,000 incentive for anyone interested in moving to the city. To qualify, a person must have moved from out-of-state, work a minimum of 32 hours a week, and live in Mitchell.

Mike Lauritsen is the Michell Area Development Corporation Foundation’s Workforce and Housing Director. He said the first “Move to Mitchell” program was successful in gaining a stronger labor force, so they launched a second.

“We awarded our first application from the new round of funding last week. Young man, moved here from Chicago. He’s an engineer for Twin City Fans, so we’re happy to have the program going again and getting new people to move to Mitchell,” said Lauritsen.

Lauritsen said between the two programs, 27 new employees are now working for 20 different employers in Mitchell. He said the employees came from 12 states and two different countries.

The employees work in a variety of fields – including a pastor, electrician, plumber, sports reporter, and general manager.

Lauritsen said the corporation works with the state in offering applicants further benefits past the $1,000 incentive.

“We do our business retention expansion visits, and we partner with the Governor’s Office of Economic Development, Department of Labor," said Lauritsen. "When we go out and do those visits, I call them health check-ups, for the businesses. We want to know if they are growing or expanding, we want to help them with that. Eighty percent of the growth in your community comes from an existing business.”
