Cheaper gas prices are expected to lead to an increase in road trips this summer.

Analysts say summer travel will be the busiest it has been in years.

Lower gas prices are playing a role in the increase in people planning on traveling this summer.

"We were about a $1.40 higher per gallon than we are this summer," said AAA South Dakota spokesperson Shawn Steward. "So certainly that is causing people to be much more open about getting out on the road and taking those road trips where maybe they may have hesitated last summer because the prices were so high."

For travel between Memorial Day and Labor Day, bookings for hotels, car rentals and other activities are already up almost 30% more than they were in 2022 according to data collected by AAA.

This summer is looking to be busy in all forms of travel from road trips to flights.

"Flight bookings for airlines are up significantly over last summer and actually air travel is supposed to be back to a pre-pandemic levels, which we haven't seen since 2019," said Steward.

He advises that people planning on traveling this summer should make bookings ahead of time in order to get better options and prices.
