National Poetry Month: Spotlight on the words of Joseph Bottum

This segment originally aired on "In the Moment" on SDPB Radio.

We bring you poetry for National Poetry Month, courtesy of South Dakota poet Joseph Bottum.

He reads us two poems from his book "Spending the Winter: A Poetry Collection."

"Bliss and Blunder"
Worthless things and things of wonder
Are fish in a single lake—
For much of bliss is caught by blunder,
And joy by some mistake.

"Homecoming"
Sometimes I dream I’m flying
just above the plain
the world in wheat beneath me,
the rivers rich with rain.

And there I hear the murmur
of what the old land knows:
all journeys need an ending,
all circles want to close.

Bottum runs a daily poetry newsletter on the online platform Substack with fellow poet Sally Thomas. Learn more about "Poems Ancient and Modern."
