Verifying American Indian Burial Mounds In SD

As of 2008, there were 19 sites believed to be American Indian burial mounds recorded in Brown County, eight in neighboring McPherson County, two in Edmunds and five in Faulk. But ongoing survey work this summer in those four counties will try to verify those sites while also attempting to determine if there are others that have never been recorded - part of South Dakota's ongoing effort to preserve its past. Meanwhile, a separate survey will look at Marshall and Day counties, which are believed to have 35 mounds and nine mounds, respectively. Katie Lamie, Repository Manager for the South Dakota State Historical Society Archaeological Research Center, and Mike Fosha, Assistant State Archaeologist and Outreach Coordinator, visited about the burial mounds including their history, locations, steps the Historical Society takes to survey, document and protect. Lamie is also the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation lead for the state.
