Senate Joint Resolution 510 has failed on the Senate floor. The proposal would have asked residents to vote on the state’s contentious grocery tax.
South Dakota is currently in the middle of a so-called “tax holiday.” 510, brought by Senate Democrat minority leader Reynold Nesiba, would have put on the ballot permanent removal of the state tax cut on grocery items while leaving the option for municipalities.
As a result, voters will see an Initiated Measure at the ballot box that would remove the entire tax structure permanently.
The 27-5 vote was mostly along party lines with Senate Republicans largely against the proposal.
