Total COVID-19 deaths in South Dakota.

Nearly 8,000 people are currently infected with COVID-19 in South Dakota. That’s the highest number since mid-December.

The latest statewide daily report shows 446 new cases, five new deaths and 202 people in the hospital. The latest fatalities bring the state’s death toll to 2,105.

The South Dakota Department of Health says unvaccinated people make up the vast majority of newly reported cases, deaths, and hospitalizations.

Fifty-eight of South Dakota’s 66 counties have “high” community spread. “High” community spread means over 10 percent of tests are positive. Overall, South Dakota has a positivity rate of nearly 14 percent.

Nearly 58 percent of South Dakotans 12 and older are fully vaccinated. Just over 63 percent of people 12 and older have at least a single dose of the vaccine.
