Susan Hasseler, senior vice president for Academic Affairs and Dean of the College at Augustana, has traveled a half-dozen times to South Africa and studied Nelson Mandela.  Dr. Joel Johnson, associate professor of government and international affairs and Chair of Moral Values at Augustana College, and Dr. Hasseler led a forum at Augustana last night called "Without Democracy There Cannot Be Peace: Nelson Mandela, South Africa and the World."  Mandela, who led the emancipation of South Africa from white minority rule, served as his country’s first black president and became an international emblem of dignity, died last Thursday at the age of 95.
