John Calvin became a business leader in South Dakota after Governor George Mickelson enticed him with South Dakota's first REDI loan.

Calvin served under four of South Dakota's governors. He becomes a member of the South Dakota Hall of Fame next month.

Legislators approve a ten percent ongoing increase in Medicaid reimbursement in response to the statewide nursing home crisis. That equals nearly 18 million additional dollars. 

Loren Diekman is the president and CEO of Jenkins Living Center in Watertown. He’s followed the Medicaid reimbursement issue closely and made several phone calls to the governor’s office and legislators. He says he’s very happy about the approved increase.

Poets in the Watertown area have an invitation to gather on the first Friday of the month to discuss poetry. Lawrence Diggs is with us today. He's on the South Dakota Arts Council's roster for artists in schools and communities. He's active in the South Dakota State Poetry Society and edits their quarterly journal Four Quarters to a Section. He also founded the International Vinegar Museum and brought the book "Pros and Cons" to publication.

Hail Hits Central And East South Dakota

Parts of South Dakota are experiencing wave after wave of significant weather. Some people saw everything from rain to hail.

Over the weekend storms moved from central to eastern South Dakota. Between an inch and an inch and a half of hail fell in areas of Lyman County with the largest hail being two and a half inches wide. The hail continued east toward Watertown with the storm increasing wind speed and rainfall.

Cari Fleegel is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Aberdeen. She says some areas saw substantial rain Saturday and Sunday.

Stephen Heidenreich

Stephen Heidenreich is a Watertown native as well as a former 1976 Olympic track and field team hopeful. During training for the event, Heidenreich was victim to a hit and run incident that left him with the mental age of a 2 year old in a 22-year-old’s body.

Now, Heidenreich travels across the country to share how his traumatic brain injury propelled him to success.

OSHA Penalizes Watertown Company

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is proposing a 77-thousand dollar fine against a South Dakota company. The penalties come after a 24 year old worker fell to his death from 33 feet.

Pierre and Watertown have a new airline carrier that begins offering flights later this summer. The change fills a need for air service to the state capital.

Pierre and Watertown struggled to maintain reliable air service after changes in federal regulation impacted small airlines.

Redlin Art Center

Terry Redlin, a renowned South Dakota artist, died on Sunday night at age 78.   Redlin retired from painting nine years ago. He died in a Watertown care center after a long-term battle with dementia.

Redlin is known for his oil paintings of wildlife and outdoor scenes. The Redlin Art Center in Watertown features his original work. 

Julie Ranum is the Executive Director of the Redlin Art Center. She says Redlin became an artist thanks to a college scholarship.   

Lead Killing Some Bald Eagles In South Dakota

Bramble Park Zoo in Watertown has cared for three eagles with lead poisoning this year. They may ingest a lead fishing weight, or eat contaminated meat…either another bird with lead poisoning, or fragmented bullets on deer carcasses.

President Barack Obama encourages South Dakotans to focus on service opportunities. Mister Obama spoke Friday at Lake Area Tech's commencement. The president highlighted personal stories of LATI workers and graduates including Staff Sergeant Joe Wiskur. The airman deploys shortly after graduation, and Mr. Obama says his education makes him a better soldier.

President Barrack Obama makes his first visit to South Dakota while in office tomorrow. This is the only state he’s not yet visited during his two terms as president. President Obama flies into Watertown tomorrow afternoon and speaks during commencement ceremonies for Lake Area Technical Institute.

President Obama To Speak In Watertown

Lake Area Tech officials say President Barack Obama is scheduled to give the commencement address to the graduating class of 2015.

Luann Strait is with Lake Area Technical Institute.  

The two-year school is located in Watertown and one of many technical schools around the state.   

Strait says the announcement came as a surprise.

The east to northeast part of South Dakota is still expected to get snow, but the National Weather Service claims it won’t be as much as originally projected in some areas. Meteorologist Troy Kleffman is with the National Weather Service in Aberdeen. He says dry air in the northeast area is causing experts to downgrade the storm.

Snow is falling in the western part of South Dakota but most of the east is clear. Dave Hintz (Hints) is a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Aberdeen. He says the storm is moving slowly right now in Aberdeen, Watertown and Sioux Falls.

"What is going on is the low pressure system has slowed a little bit with its ejection coming out of Colorado-Nebraska and this has allowed more warm and dry air to kind of punch into the eastern part of South Dakota. So things are setting up a little slower then what we had previously thought they would be," Hintz says.

Johnny Rivers In South Dakota

Singer/songwriter Johnny Rivers is in concert Friday at the Deadwood Mountain Grand Event Center and Sunday at the Watertown Event Center.  Rivers enjoyed a succession of pop hits in the 60s and 70s including "Memphis," "Mountain of Love," "Secret Agent Man," "Poor Side of Town," and "Summer Rain." 

SD Girls State Basketball Tournaments

SDPB's Gary Ellenbolt is joined by KDLO Radio program director John Seiber at this weekend's Girls State B Basketball Tournament in Huron which can be seen on SDPB 2 TV.  They provided a preview of the State B along with the State A Tournament in Watertown (SDPB 1 TV) and the State AA Tournament in Rapid City (SDPB 3 TV).  Games begin Thursday afternoon with the championship games set for Saturday night in all three locations.
