The state of North Carolina is suing manufacturers of e-cigarettes and vaping products. In South Dakota, state epidemiologist Josh Clayton says a gap in data regarding e-cigarette use among the state's young people can create challenges for policy makers and public health officials. 

The products have been on the market for about 10 years and their popularity is increasing dramatically.

Fewer South Dakota babies are dying. New numbers reveal 2016 had the lowest infant mortality rate on South Dakota record.   

South Dakota welcomed 12,270 babies last year, and 59 of them died. That means for every 1,000 live births fewer than five babies die. The rate is 4.8.

In 2015, the rate was 7.3 deaths per 1,000 live births.

Colleen Winter with the South Dakota Department of Health says people can prevent many infant deaths with a combination of healthy decisions that prioritize safety.

Efforts Underway To Ban Alcohol And Tobacco In SD

A group is now working to  make booze and tobacco illegal in South Dakota.
 
Two separate petitions are circulating to add the criminalization of alcohol and tobacco to the 2016 ballot.  Another petition would ask voters to decriminalize marijuana.
