Six nursing homes in South Dakota closed over the last year and a half--including the Hudson Care and Rehab Center within the last month. The closures are driven by low Medicaid reimbursement rates from the state. 

The legislature approved a 10% reimbursement increase earlier this year. But testimony during last week's Government Operations and Audit Committee meeting shows the problem is far from solved.

Governor Dennis Daugaard is expected to announce a modest budget today during an address before a joint session of the legislature in Pierre. Republican Senate Majority Leader Tim Rave and and Democratic Senate Minority Leader Billie Sutton joined Dakota Midday and discussed what the budget could mean for the 2015 session.

Along with victories by Dennis Daugaard, Kristi Noem and Mike Rounds in a Republican sweep of statewide races Tuesday, the GOP will also maintain their dominance in the state legislature with supermajorities in both houses. With only one week remaining in the 2014 legislative session, lawmakers are looking at the final bills and issues to be hashed out. Political Leaders in Pierre are also reflecting on some legislation they as positive this year.
