The Ultimate Fighting Championships, or UFC, are bringing nationally televised mixed martial arts competition to South Dakota this summer.

Two years ago – this would not have been possible.

The UFC scheduled its first fight in Sioux Falls at the Denny Sanford PREMIER Center on July 13th.   

Chris Semrau is the Assistant General Manager of the Sanford PREMIER Center. He has been working to bring a UFC event to Sioux Falls since the sport was sanctioned. He says it’s a huge get for the city of Sioux Falls, the state of South Dakota, and the region.

On October 17, 1974, Willie Nelson performed at the KLRN television studios on the University of Texas campus for the inaugural Austin City Limits. Over the course of four decades and hundreds of episodes, the program has featured a wide variety of artists from legends like Ray Charles and Chet Atkins to contemporary bands such as Arcade Fire and the Decemberists.

The White Wall Sessions

Since its television debut in 2013, the White Wall Sessions has provided a unique showcase for local, regional and national musicians. The show's producers capture performances in a documentary style, creating an intimate feel for viewers. Their goal is to preserve a musical moment in time.

Pioneers Of Television Season 4

The fourth season of Pioneers of Television begins tonight at 7:00 p.m. Central on SDPB-TV with the episode "Standup to Sitcom."  Future episodes include "Doctors and Nurses," "Breaking Barriers," and "Acting Funny."  Steve Boettcher, President of Boettcher Media Group and co-owner of BT Media in Milwaukee, where Pioneers of Television is produced for PBS, joined Dakota Midday to preview the new season.

Internationally known author, public television and radio host, and producer Rick Steves is discussing "Travel as a Political Act" tomorrow (9/24) at 7:30 p.m. in the Celebration Center of Our Savior's Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls. For years, Steves has used his popular travel shows on public television and the companion travel guides to make the world a smaller place. In 2009, Steves wrote the book, "Travel as a Political Act," starting with the premise that we can't begin to understand the world without experiencing it.

Casting director Rene Haynes is leading a casting seminar at Hill City High School Sunday morning in conjunction with the Black Hills Film Festival.  Haynes is a two-time Emmy Nominee for the TNT/Dreamworks mini-series "Into the West" and the HBO feature "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee."  She is recognized in the entertainment industry as one of the foremost experts in Native American and First Nation casting and consulting on projects both foreign and domestic.

Next Monday, February 18, SDPB-TV will show "The Powerbroker: Whitney Young's Fight for Civil Rights" on Independent Lens.  Young's niece, Bonnie Boswell, is an award-winning reporter, producer, commentator and talk show host.  Boswell is also Executive Director of "The Powerbroker."  She talked about her uncle and the documentary on Monday's Dakota Midday.

"Light of the Prairie: Stained Glass in South Dakota" premiers Monday, February 4, at 8 p.m. Central on SDPB-TV.  Stained glass is a unique art form found in churches, public buildings and some unexpected places throughout South Dakota.  SDPB-TV producer Stephanie Rissler and Humanities Scholar and stained glass expert Barbara Johnson of Aberdeen talked about their statewide search for stained glass.

Tuesday's "Makers" segment on Dakota Midday featured Sylvia Henkin, a broadcasting pioneer in Sioux Falls, who won the 2012 Spirit of Sioux Falls Award for her leadership and commitment to growth and development there.  Henkin was a celebrity on local radio and television and is also known for starting the St. Patrick's Day parade in Sioux Falls.
