In The Moment … September 3, 2020 Show 895 Hour 1

Democrat Susan Wismer is running for re-election to the state senate, representing District 1 in Northeast South Dakota.  She's no stranger to the state legislature, having spent 8 years in the house and 2 in the senate. She joins us today as we continue to Meet the Candidates.

Six nursing homes in South Dakota closed over the last year and a half--including the Hudson Care and Rehab Center within the last month. The closures are driven by low Medicaid reimbursement rates from the state.

The legislature approved a 10% reimbursement increase earlier this year. But testimony during last week's Government Operations and Audit Committee meeting shows the problem is far from solved.

Susan Wismer is the Democratic nominee for the state House of Representatives from District 1.

Meet the Candidates is a series of interviews conducted by SDPB. We are asking each legislative candidate the same three questions: What would you like other South Dakotans to know about your districts and constituency? Discuss major issue or topic you want the Legislature to address? What legislation or solutions will you bring forward to deal with it?

The general election campaign season kicked off this week with debates at the Dakotafest ag show in Mitchell. On Wednesday Republican Governor Dennis Daugaard faced his challengers Democrat Susan Wismer and independent Mike Myers. The four candidates for the U.S. Senate seat currently held by retiring Democrat Tim Johnson squared off later in the afternoon: Republican Mike Rounds, Democrat Rick Weiland and independents Larry Pressler and Gordon Howie. Issues at both debates included the EB-5 visa program and the Affordable Care Act.

A federal judge says November’s ballot must include the name of the new independent candidate for lieutenant governor. Independent candidate for governor Mike Myers’ first lieutenant governor withdrew from the race. He picked a second nominee, but the Secretary of State hasn’t formally filed the paperwork because state law doesn’t address the replacement.

South Dakota Democratic gubernatorial candidate Susan Wismer has announced Susy Blake as her lieutenant governor running mate, making this the first all-female ticket for governor in South Dakota history.

This decision, plus the recent state Republican convention and upcoming state Democratic convention, were topics covered with this week's Dakota Political Junkies. The discussion included Sioux Falls Argus-Leader political reporter David Montgomery and Mitchell Daily Republic publisher Seth Tupper.
