Dr. Sarah Keenan, a paleontologist and Assistant Professor of Geology and Geological Engineering at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology explains the process Tuesday evening during her STEAM Cafe presentation, Life After Death: Ecological Impacts of Animal Decomposition.

October 16th at 6pm, the next STEAM Cafe presents Dr. Laura Kremmel from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology Humanities Department.

She joined In The Moment today from the Black Hills Surgical Hospital studio at SDPB Black Hills Studio in downtown Rapid City.

Dr. Jennifer Benning, Associate Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. She is also a leader of the Engineering and Science Projects in Community Service Projects (EPICS). Dr. Benning is the featured speaker at the STEAM Café at the Hay Camp Brewing company on Tuesday, September 18th. The EPICS program provides students an opportunity to partner on community projects and earn course credits. Projects include tackling homelessness by designing tiny houses; building greenhouses or saving historic buildings.

Dr. Jon Kellar and Associate Professor Dr. Grant Crawford discuss Anti-Counterfeiting Technology. South Dakota School of Mines & Technology and Dakota State University researchers are working with a team of officials and scientists to help combat the online sale of counterfeit goods and art. Researchers purchased items from accredited websites. They then went to part of the internet called the “dark web,” where online traffic can’t be easily tracked, and purchased similar items they suspected to be counterfeit.

ws anCabot-Ann Christofferson is the Liaison and Deputy Director of the Majorana Project at the Sanford Underground Research Facility as well as an Instructor in the South Dakota School of Mines Chemistry and Applied Biological Sciences Department.

The Majorana Demostrator Collaboration Project began in 2010 with growing clean copper to build the experiment.

The South Dakota School of Mines and Technology launches a new venture this week called STEAM Cafe. It's a partnership with SDPB and Hay Camp Brewing Company. The project features South Dakota Mines faculty and staff exploring topics ranging from cutting edge research to history.

STEAM Café, an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics, is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. the third Tuesday of each month, at Hay Camp Brewing Company. The first talk is slated for April 17.
