The Governor of South Dakota delivers a "State of the State" address to the opening day of the state legislature. The address typically offers a mix of accomplishments from the previous year and plans for the year ahead.  Governor Kristi Noem addressed the state legislature Tuesday. Her initiatives this year included an abortion ban, expansion of broadband services, ag industry investment, civics education, and scholarships.

Governor Kristi Noem says South Dakota is open for business. The governor highlighted expansion of high speed internet services during the state of the state address Tuesday afternoon. She also outlined additional steps she wants to take this year to make South Dakota even more attractive to businesses.

To illustrate the importance of high-speed internet to small businesses, Governor Noem points to the Linderman family. As owners of the only grocery store in Timber Lake—40 miles from the next grocery store—Noem explains they struggled without access to high speed internet.

South Dakota’s governor says he wants to fight methamphetamine by punishing bad behavior and reinforcing the good.

Governor Dennis Daugaard says he wants to offer incentives to beat addiction. He says he supports allowing offenders who complete court-ordered treatment in a year one opportunity to reduce a felony to a misdemeanor. Daugaard says he also supports mandatory jail time for people on probation or parole who fail drug tests.

Lust Says State Must Focus on Developing Workforce

Building a stronger workforce in South Dakota is the goal of Governor Dennis Daugaard and many lawmakers this session. Representative Dave Lust says Governor Daugaard’s speech Tuesday was upbeat and highlighted the positives that state has going for it, such as low unemployment and budget surplus. He says while South Dakota has come of the recession a lot better than other states, he appreciates the governor’s initiative to develop skilled workers.

In Governor Dennis Daugaard’s State of the State address Tuesday afternoon, he laid out strategies to improve education in the state that will correlate to a stronger workforce. Representative Bernie Hunhoff says that has always been a goal of South Dakota’s Democratic Party, but doesn’t think the governor’s proposals go far enough to address the issue.

In his annual State of the State address, Governor Dennis Daugaard previewed legislation he supports for passage in the 2013 legislative session. Dominating his focus is a 32-page package of proposals he calls the South Dakota Public Safety Improvement Act. He spoke at greater length about details of the package, as well as other legislation, at a news conference following his speech, and SDPB’s Victoria Wicks attended to bring us today’s Dakota Digest.
