Sioux Falls To Host Sport Championships

Sioux Falls is hosting 8 championships for Division II sports starting in 2015, the NCAA announced Wednesday. From 2015 to 2018, South Dakota’s largest city hosts college basketball, volleyball, wrestling, cross country, and track and field events. Wes Hall, executive director of Sioux Falls Sports Authority, says the NCAA sees opportunities in a city the size of Sioux Falls, which has the infrastructure in place to support major sporting events.

Longtime Augie AD Steps Down

Longtime Augustana College Athletic Director Bill Gross announces he will step down.

For 28 years, Bill Gross has led Augustana College’s athletic department. Now he’s stepping down.

Gross went to Augustana College in Sioux Falls in 1969 as a student and basketball player. After graduation and few years away, Gross returned to Augie in 1979. He coached men’s basketball for the Vikings when then-President Bill Nelson asked Gross if he’d consider adding athletic director duties to his coaching.

Five-time World Saddle Bronc Riding Champion and Ree Heights native Billy Etbauer is coming to Ft. Pierre this weekend for the unveiling of his life-sized statue.  The unveiling takes place Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the Johnny Smith Memorial Sculpture Garden at the Casey Tibbs Rodeo Center.  Etbauer and his family currently raise horses in Edmond, Oklahoma.

"Town Ball" With Mel Antonen

Organized amateur baseball, often called "town ball," celebrates its 80th anniversary this summer.  Mel Antonen has written a story in the May/June edition of South Dakota Magazine about six men who, for decades, have managed amateur baseball teams in small South Dakota communities.  Antonen grew up in Lake Norden, South Dakota.  He currently writes about baseball for SI.com and is a commentator on Washington Nationals and Baltimore Orioles TV broadcasts.

A Look At The 2013 Sioux Falls Canaries

Steve Shirley, manager of the Sioux Falls Canaries, joins the program to talk about the upcoming season. After a couple seasons as the Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants, the team opens the 2013 season on Thursday once again as the Sioux Falls Canaries. They play the Sioux City Explorers in Sioux City. The Canaries are a part of the American Association of Independent Baseball, a league that includes teams from St. Paul, Winnipeg, Kansas City, and El Paso. The team finished with a losing 45-55 record last year, but experienced a big jump in attendance.

The Augustana College women's basketball team beat previously unbeaten Clayton State College of Georgia 81-68 in their first round game of the NCAA Elite Eight Tuesday.  The Vikings will play Dowling College of New York in the semi-finals Wednesday night.  Sioux Falls Argus Leader sports reporter Matt Zimmer is covering the team on the road.

Bright Future For Nate Wolters

South Dakota State University men's basketball standout Nate Wolters saw his collegiate career come to an end last week when the Jackrabbits lost to the University of Michigan in the first round of the NCAA Division One Basketball Tournament.  Now, the Summit League Player of the Year is looking ahead to the NBA draft at which he is expected to be selected in the early rounds.  Wolters joined Dakota Midday from his home in Minnesota.

Spelunking In South Dakota

Don Kopp has written about his experience exploring rarely seen reaches of Jewel Cave in the cover story in the March/April 2013 issue of South Dakota Magazine.  Kopp accompanied Black Hills caving pioneers Herb and Jan Conn on a journey to Metrecal Cavern several years ago.  The route passed through openings only a few inches wide.  Kopp, a spelunking enthusiast, explored dozens of caves during his 29-year career with the state Division of Forestry.  Kopp was joined on Dakota Midday by South Dakota Magazine editor Katie Hunhoff.

Summit League Championship Games

Sioux Falls hosts the Summit League Basketball championship games Tuesday.  The women's game has the University of South Dakota facing South Dakota State University at 2:30 p.m.  At 7:00 p.m., the SDSU men play North Dakota State University.  Winners advance to the NCAA National Tournaments.  Sioux Falls Argus Leader sports reporter Terry Vandrovec provided a summary of the tournament and a preview of Tuesday's games.

SD Girls State Basketball Tournaments

SDPB's Gary Ellenbolt is joined by KDLO Radio program director John Seiber at this weekend's Girls State B Basketball Tournament in Huron which can be seen on SDPB 2 TV.  They provided a preview of the State B along with the State A Tournament in Watertown (SDPB 1 TV) and the State AA Tournament in Rapid City (SDPB 3 TV).  Games begin Thursday afternoon with the championship games set for Saturday night in all three locations.

State Girls Tournament Pairings Announced: New Champions in A, B Fields

The State High School Girls Basketball Tournaments take place this weekend. Class "AA" teams play in Rapid City, the Class "A" field goes to Watertown, and Class "B" meets in Huron. New champions are guaranteed in Classes "A" and "B," since St. Thomas More of Rapid City did not advance to State in Class "A," and top-seed Warner won over Summit in a "B" Region Final.

Wrestling May Be Eliminated From Olympics In 2020

Bye is a realtor in Vermillion. In the winter, he serves as head wrestling coach at Vermillion High School.  His Tanagers brought two place winners home from the Class A State Tournament last weekend.  Bye’s nephew, Brett Bye, finished third at 152 pounds—while Regan Bye, the coach’s son, won the state championship at 145 pounds.

Sioux Falls Argus Leader Sports Editor Stu Whitney penned a satiric open letter to the International Olympic Committee's executive board in response to the news that wrestling will be eliminated from Olympic competition starting in 2020.  Whitney talked about the importance of wrestling as part of an athletic culture in South Dakota and much of the Midwest.

State Pheasant Boom May End Without Landowner Help

Members of Pheasants Forever say South Dakota could lose its lucrative pheasant hunting seasons in a few years. A field biologist with the group, Mike Blaalid, says bird numbers are declining in the state, due to reduced participation in the Conservation Reserve Program.

Blaalid remarks, "I think our main problem is the loss of CRP acres in the state. Over the past six years, we’ve lost over 600 thousand acres of CRP throughout the state.

Miss Rodeo South Dakota

2012 Miss Rodeo South Dakota Courtney Peterson.

Miss Rodeo South Dakota Courtney Peterson of Sisseton was the first runner-up in the Miss Rodeo America pageant last week during the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas, Nevada.  She also won the horsemanship contest and was named Miss Congeniality.  Peterson's reign as Miss Rodeo South Dakota continues until January, 2013.

National Finals Rodeo

Steer wrestler Todd Suhn of Hermosa and barrel racer Nikki Steffes of Vale are among six South Dakota contestants participating in the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in Las Vegas beginning Thursday.  This is Suhn's 16th appearance at the WNFR.  Steffes, a two-time National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association women's all-around champion, has qualified for her first trip to the WNFR.

Coyotes vs Jackrabbits

More than a year’s worth of anticipation is about over for South Dakota college football fans.  Saturday marks the first football game between South Dakota State and the University of South Dakota in nine years.  The game is taking place at Coughlin-Alumni Stadium in Brookings.  A Jackrabbit win puts the team in good shape for a playoff spot—if the Coyotes win, it means a two-win season.  U-S-D football coach Joe Glenn says a win in the rivalry game would take some of the sting out of a tough schedule.

College football’s regular season ends for The University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University on Saturday.  The Jackrabbits and Coyotes meet in Brookings Saturday afternoon.  S-D-S-U has won seven of its ten games this year—and could earn a playoff spot with a win over U-S-D.  But Jackrabbit Offensive Coordinator Eric Eidsness (EYEDS-ness) says his team needs to finish the job at hand.

Tickets are hard to come by for this Saturday's USD vs. SDSU football game at Coughlin Alumni Stadium in Brookings. The Coyotes have not played at Brookings since 2002. The last meeting between the teams was in 2003. Terry Vandrovec covers SDSU football for the Sioux Falls Argus Leader and Joe Van Goor is the play-by-play voice for the USD Coyotes. They talked about the rivalry and the excitement surrounding Saturday's game.
