The 2017 Folk Off winner for the Sioux River Folk Fest is Lil’ Red and the Medicated Moose Band. They're a married musical couple and they're joining us live from our studios at the University of South Dakota for this week's Moment in Sound. They play at Sioux River Folk Fest in Canton tonight at 6 p.m.

In The Moment ... May 24, 2017 Show 100 Hour 1

As top programmers compete in Rapid City at the International Collegiate Programming Contest this week, cyber attacks continue to make headlines across the globe. The recent Wanna-Cry malware wreaked havoc in more than 150 countries. U.S. Senator Mike Rounds serves as chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee Subcommittee on cyber security. He joins us now to talk about cyber acts of war, how to revitalize American policy and strategy and more.

Work by contemporary Oglala Lakota artist Wade Patton is featured at an exhibit at Rapid City's Sioux Indian Museum, located in the Journey Museum. The show, called Re-Vision, opened this weekend and continues through Sept. 30.

Patton was raised in South Dakota and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Black Hills State. He then moved to Boston and spent a decade there working as an artist as well as an art framer before returning home.

Paintings by Wesley May, a Red Lake Chippewa from Northern Minnesota, are now on exhibit at the Sioux Indian Museum in Rapid City. SDPB’s Victoria Wicks spoke with May at the show’s opening this weekend, one of many events held to observe Native American Day and the Black Hills Powwow. May tells Wicks his art flows from within and celebrates the positive turn his life has taken.
The Sioux Indian Museum is housed in the Journey Museum in Rapid City. Wesley May’s paintings are on exhibit until Dec. 3.

Artist Oscar Howe has had a marked influence on American Indian artists who learned from his style. Whether Howe himself was influenced by other artists is up for discussion. Viewers can ponder that question for themselves at the Journey Museum in Rapid City, where Howe’s work is on display through September 7th. Regardless of what inspired his work, SDPB’s Victoria Wicks learns that Howe broke ground in ways that continue to benefit other artists today.

Photographs by a Rapid City writer and artist are on exhibit at the Sioux Indian Museum. V.R. Janis says her macro photography isn’t intended to be abstract as much as it calls attention to the fine details and composition of objects. Janis tells SDPB’s Victoria Wicks that her art and her writing are designed to revitalize indigenous traditions.
