The Senate Education Committee unanimously passes a bill to allow for the creation of community-based schools centered on Native American language and culture curriculum.

The approval comes after a lengthy amendment process to bring the Governor’s office and Department of Education on board.

Senator Jim Bolin was the vice-chair for the Extraordinary Cost Fund for Special Education summer study. The group met 3 times over the course of the summer.

Mr. Bolin joined In The Moment today to discuss the study and what came of it.

A bill adjusting reorganization requirements for low-enrolled school districts is moving to the senate floor. Despite the do-pass motion, some lawmakers expressed hesitancy in adopting the new measure in state statute.

Every ten years state lawmakers must draft new boundaries for state legislative districts. Observers say as population grows in more urban areas, Sioux Falls may receive another legislative district in 2021, following the census.
