Nine weeks of regular-season high school football end in South Dakota tonight (Thursday).  Some schools are already locked into the post-season, and know they'll play a first-round  game next week.  But other schools either have to win their last game, or get help from another team in the state, to have their seasons extended.  Some schools need both to happen.

High school soccer in South Dakota continues its growth in popularity. Officials in the sport say each year the talent pool gets deeper, and the games become more competitive.

The team from Hot Springs, is following this trend, but with a little twist.

Hot Springs high school isn’t able to have a girl’s soccer team, due to the policy with enrollment numbers. But this doesn’t stop three junior girls from playing the game they love.

Four high school golf tournaments are currently underway in South Dakota.

Mitchell and Hot Springs are each hosting one tournament, and Rapid City hosting two. This year, instead of having the spring golf championships in May, the South Dakota High School Activities Association decided to push the event to June - in hopes of better weather conditions. John Krogstrand is with the High School Activities Association in South Dakota.

The State Visual Arts Event In Sioux Falls

Mar 22, 2016

The Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls hosted thousands of people over the weekend for the state Class AA basketball tournament. But it wasn’t the only contest happening in the building.

The second annual Visual Arts competition includes hundreds of artwork pieces on display in the main concourse area of the center. Fans attending the games took in artwork from 307 individual entries representing forty schools at this year’s competition.

Viborg-Hurley, A Friendship Worth 2,000 Points

Mar 13, 2016

In South Dakota, a basketball player scoring 2,000 points in her high school career is somewhat rare. In early February, Abby Hora of Viborg-Hurley became the 24th player in South Dakota history to join the 2,000 point club. While Hora may get the credit in the stat book – her lifelong friendship with a teammate on the court is what made the 2,000 point journey memorable.

It was the final home game of the season for Viborg-Hurley as they hosted Bridgewater-Emery on February 8. Entering the game, Hora needed 20 points to reach 2,000. In just the first quarter, she put up eleven.

Pierre in Class A and Canton in Class B are champions in State Wrestling. The state tournaments concluded at the Rushmore Plaza Civic Center in Rapid City on Saturday night.

Last season, Canton was ranked first, but then fell to third at state. The C-Hawks co-head coach Jeremy Swenson says it’s a fantastic feeling to answer this season with a state title. Swenson appreciates the support the team received from the many Canton fans, who made the 350 plus mile journey across the state for the event.

Dakota Digest for February 12, 2016

Feb 12, 2016

The state legislature has passed a transgender bathroom bill to the Senate floor. It will be voted on next week, and if it passes, it will go to Governor Dennis Daugaards desk. Also, the Governor's education bill has been delayed until next week. State Gymnastics is also underway at the Swiftel Center in Brookings on Friday and Saturday. All of this and more on this week's edition of Dakota Digest.

The State Gymnastics Meet begins Friday at the Swiftel Center in Brookings. Team Championships are scheduled for Friday with Individual and All-Around Championships scheduled for Saturday.

Longtime Mitchell Coach Gary Munsen Dies

Jan 12, 2016

A teacher and coach who spent most of his time running Mitchell High School’s successful basketball program has died.  Gary Munsen died at home Tuesday morning.

Gary Munsen was a larger-than-life figure in his four decades on South Dakota’s sidelines.  He was a big man, known for his intensity, and his success as coach of the Mitchell Kernels.  A former player who became a friend of Munsen is Steve Culhane, now the business manager for the Mitchell School District.

28 high school football teams are involved in playoff semi-final games this weekend.  Half the remaining field will head for Vermillion and State Championship games next week.  One team in one of the toughest divisions in South Dakota is in somewhat unfamiliar territory—but the Lennox Orioles defeated a heavily-favored opponent on the road in the first round.

With just two weeks before high school playoffs, teams are running out of chances to work themselves into a good position for the post-season.  Those playoff games can mean a lot of travel for schools—but there’s one school in northwest South Dakota that goes long distances to get almost anywhere.

Friday night, the lights will go on at high school football fields across South Dakota.  Teams in the state’s seven classes begin play with an eye toward state championships in mid-November.  But this season, and in 2016, the lights won’t go on in a southeast South Dakota town that once was a football powerhouse.
