SD Schools Agree With Transgender Student Sports Policy

A recent poll shows about 80 percent of schools in the state support the current guidelines for transgender student athletes. Currently, students who want to participate in a sport as a gender other than that assigned at birth have to get permission through the South Dakota High School Activities Association.

Amy Burnett is one of the best South Dakota basketball players ever. Burnett grew up in Huron and led Huron High to a class AA State Championship in 1989, her junior season. The team took third place during Burnett's senior year but she set a state tournament scoring record with 86 points over three games. She also lettered in volleyball and track.

The Boys State Tennis Championships are underway in the Sioux Empire this weekend with Sioux Falls Lincoln searching for their fourth straight title.

Kaleb Dobbs is a senior for the Patriots tennis team. He’s searching for his third straight individual state title in flight one singles. Next year, Dobbs will play for the Golden Gophers at the University of Minnesota.

SDHSAA Has A New Executive Director

Dan Swartos is the new executive director of the South Dakota High School Activities Association. Swartos is currently the superintendent for the McCook Central School District. He replaces Wayne Carney as SDHSAA Executive Director this summer.

Swartos says the new job is a bit intimidating. He says even though he has big shoes to fill, Carney is going to work with him to make sure the transition runs smoothly.
