Neel Kashkari: The Unemployment Rate

The recent release of the April jobs report put the nation's unemployment rate at 14.7% and showed a loss of 20.5 million jobs during the month. Neel Kashkari, president of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis, fears that the unemployment rate is understated and that the real number is much more devastating. Neel Kashkari was a virtual guest for last week's Morning Fill Up hosted by Matt Ehlman of the Numad Group.

A fire that completely destroyed a Lakota-owned-grocery store in Whiteclay, Nebraska has been ruled accidental.

We spoke with the Nebraska State fire marshal investigating the incident and was given access to the official report on the blaze at Arrowhead Foods.

Mike Turner is fire marshal for the entire Nebraska Panhandle. His report notes that a fire at Arrowhead Foods in Whiteclay was called in at 9:06 a.m. on July 25. 

Long-Term Budget Planning

According to a new report from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, almost every state should adopt a much more rigorous approach to their long-term budget planning. The report ranks the states on the degree to which they use ten tools to help states chart their fiscal course accurately and make mid-course corrections when needed. The ten tools in the report fall into three broad categories: a map for the future, professional and credible estimates, and ways to stay on course.
