Writer/Director Michael Kirk returned to Dakota Midday to talk about his new FRONTLINE documentary, "Cliffhanger," which premiers Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. Central on SDPB-TV.  Based on interviews with key players including Speaker of the House John Boehner, White House adviser Gene Sperling and former Obama Chief of Staff William Daley, Cliffhanger investigates how a clash of politics and personalities led to one of the most bitter high-stakes standoffs in modern American history - a duel at the edge of the "fiscal cliff."

Next Monday, February 18, SDPB-TV will show "The Powerbroker: Whitney Young's Fight for Civil Rights" on Independent Lens.  Young's niece, Bonnie Boswell, is an award-winning reporter, producer, commentator and talk show host.  Boswell is also Executive Director of "The Powerbroker."  She talked about her uncle and the documentary on Monday's Dakota Midday.

In February, PBS airs a three-hour documentary called “Makers.”  It’s about women who make the U.S. great.  We are interviewing women in South Dakota who make the state great.

On today’s Dakota Digest we have an excerpt from an interview between SDPB’s Karl Gehrke and Sioux Falls business woman and broadcast pioneer Sylvia Henken.   Henken worked at KSOO-TV in the 1960’s and 70’s and founded the city’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade.   She is described as a Sioux Falls icon.

FRONTLINE producer John Merrow received unprecedented access to Michelle Rhee while she was chancellor of Washington, D.C. public schools.  FRONTLINE's "The Education of Michelle Rhee," which airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. Central on SDPB-TV, examines Rhee's three year legacy in Washington, D.C., including her battles with the teacher's union and her handling of a cheating scandal in the District.  Merrow previewed the episode on Monday's Dakota Midday.

The FRONTLINE special, "Dropout Nation," airs tonight at 8 p.m. Central on SDPB-TV.  Every year, hundreds of thousands of teenagers in the United States quit high school without diplomas.  FRONTLINE spent a semester immersed in Sharpstown High School in Houston, once a notorious "dropout factory," to produce a portrait of four students in crisis and the teachers, counselors and principal waging a daily struggle to get them to graduate.  Dakota Midday host Karl Gehrke is joined by FRONTLINE producer Frank Koughan.
