Finger painting is a messy art form usually reserved for kids. But one South Dakota artist has developed a life-sized version. She paints her body to create images of animals.

Abstract animal paintings of all sizes are scattered though Christie Sandvik’s house. But this self-taught artist doesn’t use paint brushes.

“I do body prints. I’ve been doing it for about 15 years now. Which is kind of cool because I have a really unique style of art work that I’ve been able to develop.”

The State Visual Arts Event In Sioux Falls

The Denny Sanford PREMIER Center in Sioux Falls hosted thousands of people over the weekend for the state Class AA basketball tournament. But it wasn’t the only contest happening in the building.

The second annual Visual Arts competition includes hundreds of artwork pieces on display in the main concourse area of the center. Fans attending the games took in artwork from 307 individual entries representing forty schools at this year’s competition.

Art Instructor Helps To Restore Opera House

Built nearly a century ago, the Homestake Opera House in Lead was the center of community life providing residents a social meeting place for operas, theatre performances, concerts and other cultural activities. A fire in 1984 destroyed much of the theatre and roof, however, the integrity of the building remained. Since then, community members have worked to bring the Opera House back to the grandeur of its early years - a goal that Black Hills State University art instructor Erica Merchant is helping to make a reality.

Rapid City's Art Alley has some in the community saying there needs to be more control over what kind of art goes up.  Some say there is too much scribble and the alley has degenerated into unsightly graffiti.  But some artists see the space as incredibly positive.  Dan Seftner, President and CEO of Destination Rapid City, Pepper Massey and Tyler Read of the Dahl Arts Center and Rapid City business owner Dennis Halterman talked about Art Alley's future.

Artists Of The Plains Art Show/Sale

The artwork of 26 local and regional artists is on display Friday through Sunday at the 33rd annual Artists of the Plains Art Show and Sale, sponsored by the Center for Western Studies at Augustana College.  The show is at the Holiday Inn City Centre in Sioux Falls.  Kristi Nelson, education assistant at the Center for Western Studies, said Augustana College art students will again be part of this year's show.  The event is free and open to the public.

Meldrum Park Mural Grant

Artists Dave Lowenstein and Ashley Laird are mural artists from Lawrence, Kansas, who are creating a mural in Sioux Falls' Whittier neighborhood's Meldrum Park.  They have been attending community meetings and visiting public schools in Sioux Falls to understand the international character of the neighborhood.  Lowenstein and Laird appeared on Dakota Midday Monday along with Tim Hoheisel, Executive Director of the Sioux Falls Arts Council.

"A Meeting Of The Grandfathers"

This month marks the 150th anniversary of the largest mass execution in U.S. history.  Thirty-eight Dakota men were hanged in Mankato, Minnesota, on December 26, 1862.  The hangings came after the U.S./Dakota War in the summer of 1862.  Lyle W. Miller's painting, "A Meeting of the Grandfathers," is featured in the Minnesota Historical Society's exhibit about the U.S./Dakota War of 1862.  Miller is speaking on the war at the Prehistoric Indian Village in Mitchell on Friday at 2:00 pm.

Black Hills artist George Prisbe-Przybysz has created twenty new South Dakota landscapes, some for exhibition at Washington Pavilion in Sioux Falls.  The show runs from November 9th to February 17th.  SDPB News Producer Victoria Wicks visited with the artist for today's Dakota Midday.
