A 2015 Gallup Poll says three in four Americans believe in paranormal activity, including 37% that believe in haunted houses. Just prior to that poll, Michael Kleen, editor of Mysterious Heartland, wrote a piece for his website called Top 10 Haunted Places in the Dakotas. The list includes abandoned places like the San Haven Sanatorium in Dunseith, North Dakota, to places with daily visitors like the Orpheum Theater in Sioux Falls and the Hotel Alex Johnson in Rapid City.

When Trampled Under Foot played the Orpheum Theater in Sioux Falls last November it was already known that it would be one of the band's final shows together.  Siblings Danielle, Nick and Kris Schnebelen had performed as Trampled Under Foot for about a dozen years when drummer Kris announced he was leaving the band.  Bassist Danielle and guitarist Nick soldiered on and added veteran Kansas City musician Jan Faircloth on drums.  The addition of keyboardist Mike "Shinetop, Jr." Sedovic turned the band into a four-piece.  Faircloth and Sedovic helped Trampled

With a smooth sound bringing together elements of funk, R&B, rock and traditional jazz, Jeff Lorber Fusion set the table for the late 70's jazz fusion movement.  Lorber began playing the piano at the age of four.  The Philadelphia native took a liking to jazz while attending the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston.  He formed Jeff Lorber Fusion in Portland, Oregon after his schooling.  The group quickly released five albums from 1977-81 and rose to the top of the jazz fusion scene.  Lorber would release over a dozen more solo studio albums

Sena Ehrhardt is no stranger to South Dakota.  From the Twin Cities, Ehrhardt continues to perform throughout the area on a regular basis.  She was raised around the blues by her father/guitarist Ed Ehrhardt.  She performed at JazzFest 2012 in Sioux Falls and, a year later, released "All In" on Blind Pig Records.  It was produced by multi-Grammy Award winner Jim Gaines and yielded the song "Dreamin' of Dyin'" which received a 2013 Blues Blast Music Award for Song of the Year.  A new CD from Ehrhardt entitled "Live My Life" is due to be released this

The Colorado-based contemporary jazz band Dotsero have developed a following in this region by way of their Jazzfest performances in 2005 and 2010.  The Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society brought them back to Sioux Falls for the 2013-14 "Let the Good Times Roll" Concert Series as Dotsero played at the Orpheum Theater on January 24. 

Dotsero's most recent release, "Steppin' Outta Th' Boat," came out in 2012.  It features their jazzed-up versions of songs by artists like The Beatles, U2, Aerosmith, Chicago and Fine Young Cannibals.

The Union Grove Pickers, a Sioux Falls based folk/American band, are set to release their second album, "Great Plains Driftin'," at a cd release concert on Saturday, March 22 at the Orpheum Theater in Sioux Falls.  Band members Tim Jewell, Josh Rieck, Megan DeBoer, Erin Castle and Travis Jamison talked about the upcoming release and performed live at SDPB's studios at the University of Sioux Falls on Tuesday.

The Soul of John Black will perform Friday, March 7, at 8:00 p.m. at the Orpheum Theater in Sioux Falls as part of the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society's 2013-2014 concert series. The Soul of John Black is the nom de musique John Bigham, whose impressive resume includes a stint as percussionist with the Miles Davis band, eight years of guitar and keyboard work with the pioneering rock-funk-ska band Fishbone, and touring and session work with Dr. Dre, Eminem, Nikka Costa, Bruce Hornsby and Everlast.

Dotsero Returns To Sioux Falls

Colorado based jazz band Dotsero returns to Sioux Falls Friday night for a 8:00 show at the Orpheum Theater.  The concert is part of the Sioux Falls Jazz and Blues Society's 2013-14 Concert Series.  Dotsero played Jazzfest in 2005 and 2010.  Dotsero saxophonist Steve Watts joined Karl Gehrke on Dakota Midday to talk about the band's spontaneous, stylish, energetic and humorous live show.

Human Sex Trafficking Told Through Dance

Daintry TenNapel knows human sex trafficking happens in South Falls and South Dakota. She wants others to know about it, too. To tell that story, TenNapel is turning to the performing arts. "Freedom: Unveiling the Cries of a Sex Slave" combines dance and cinematography in a 90-minute show. There are performances Friday and Saturday at 7:00 p.m. at the Orpheum Theater in Sioux Falls.
