The Senate Education Committee unanimously passes a bill to allow for the creation of community-based schools centered on Native American language and culture curriculum.

The approval comes after a lengthy amendment process to bring the Governor’s office and Department of Education on board.

A woman who attended the COP24 climate change gathering in Poland last week is in Rapid City this week.

Andrea Carmen of Tucson is executive director of the International Indian Treaty Council.

In Poland, she was a member of a group of indigenous people who have found a new place at the table in climate talks.

In Rapid City, at the Oceti Sakowin Treaty Conference, she shared the news.

The Dakota Access Pipeline is a $3.8 billion, 1,200 mile long pipeline that will carry Bakken Crude Oil from North Dakota to Illinois. Construction of the pipeline is nearly complete.

Those against the pipeline are making a stand at several camps now established near the construction site in North Dakota. Local law enforcement have made several arrests of activists who are attempting to stop the pipeline.

A statewide tour of Congressional medals awarded to Native American code talkers and their tribes ended in the Black Hills yesterday/on Veterans Day. SDPB’s Jim Kent visited with a Native American spokesperson for the South Dakota National Guard to discuss the medals and their importance to tribal people.
