Today is the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz. It was the largest extermination camp run by Nazi Germany in occupied Poland during World War II. More than a million people were murdered there. Today, only a handful of survivors are still alive. 

Patrick Hicks is an author and writer-in-residence at Augustana University. His books include the novel "The Commandant of Lubazec," the short story collection "The Collector of Names," and the poetry anthology "Library of the Mind."

Video Arts Studios has produced a documentary about Stern's rescue efforts and his life as a civic leader in North Dakota.  Producers Art Phillips and Carl Oberholtzer shared details of the film with Prairie Public's Doug Hamilton.
