Concerned by the plight of the Malawian children, Peter Mawanga has gained the moniker of "Voice of the Voiceless."  He established Talents of the Malawian Child in 2004 and he has trained and mentored orphaned and venerable children during music workshops.  As a result of these projects Mawanga produced three albums for these children. 

Over the last 10 years, Peter Mawanga and The Amaravie Movement have been dedicated to Nyanja, the genre that's created through their multiple elements of instrumentation, rhythms and melodies.

Peter Mawanga has come to be known as the "Voice of the Voiceless."  A champion for Malawi's underprivileged youth, Mawanga has composed several socially conscious songs in a genre that predominantly melds three of Malawi's regional cultures.  Together since 2007, Peter Mawanga and The Amaravi Movement bring together Malawian instrumentation, jazz guitar, marimba rhythms and singing in Chichewa to create traditional melodies and rhythms that Mawanga calls Afro-vibes.

"Loving Vincent" is the story of the death, and more importantly, the life, of artist Vincent van Gogh. It's the world's first oil painted film. More than 125 professional oil painters created 65,000 individually painted frames for animation. Nothing you see in the film is computer generated.

It plays at the Matthews Opera House in Spearfish this weekend, November 17 to 19. Cinema Falls brings it to the Washington Pavilion Belbas Theatre on Sunday, December 3.

When Jim Croce died in a plane crash en route to Austin, Texas, in 1973, he left behind a wife and son. His son, A.J. Croce, followed in his footsteps as a recording and touring musician and songwriter. A.J. Croce's career has already spanned over 20 years as he's headlined concerts and festivals worldwide. The young players in Mipso bring so many influences into the mix that this is not your average string band.  Modern pop sounds are merged with traditional bluegrass and amazing harmonies.  The resulting textures are so attractive that Mipso's second album, "Old Time Reverie," debuted at #1 on the Billboard Bluegrass chart last year.  Formed in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Mipso is Jacob Sharp, Joseph Terrell, Wood Robinson and Libby Rodenbough.  They played the Matthews Opera House in Spearfish in April.

Matthews Opera House and Arts Center

The Matthews Opera House in Spearfish was built in 1906 for stage productions and traveling shows. By the 1920s, it was primarily a movie house. After a new movie theater was opened down the street, the opera house was used as everything from a shooting gallery to a practice basketball court. By the mid-1950s, the building was falling into disrepair.

Composer, cellist and trombonist Dana Leong blends jazz, classical and hip-hop to create unique musical sounds that don’t fit in any particular genre. He grew up in the Bay Area of California and later studied at the Manhattan School of Music. He is currently based in New York City.

Fassbender Collection

Five years ago the cities of Lead, Deadwood and Spearfish purchased the Fassbender photo collection. The  800,000 Black Hills photographs capture historic events such as presidential visits and the Spearfish Canyon Road grand opening as well as day-to-day life in the gold mines and on reservations. There are also wedding, graduation and family photos.

CMT Edge called the Barefoot Movement one of the most promising bands on the bluegrass scene.  In October, the Nashville-based quartet received the Momentum Band of the Year Award from the International Bluegrass Music Association.

Matuto's infectious music finds a unique place where Brazilian rhythms meet Appalachian fiddle tunes. There are also healthy doses of jazz, blues, rock, Cajun and other influences. The musicians in the New York City-based band follow their ears to wherever they may lead.

The five members of Pert Near Sandstone take traditional American string band music and infuse it with a contemporary, raw energy. The band was formed a decade ago and recently celebrated its tenth anniversary with a performance at First Avenue in Minneapolis.

In 2008, Pert Near Sandstone was hand-picked by Garrison Keillor to appear as the featured musical guest on A Prairie Home Companion. Before the show Garrison proclaimed that, “The group has become a force on the Minnesota roots music scene and beyond.”
