Hemp Legalization Heads To Gov. Noem

Industrial hemp legalization is now headed to Governor Kristi Noem’s desk.

That’s after the house concurred with amendments placed on the bill in the Senate.

Noem says legalizing industrial hemp paves the way for marijuana legalization in the state.

House lawmakers are again supporting industrial hemp production by voting heavily in favor of legalization.

That’s after lawmakers in the Senate heavily amended the bill with changes they say are from the governor’s office.

State Senate Passes Industrial Hemp Production

One day after it failed, the South Dakota State Senate is passing the bill that legalizes industrial hemp production.

State Senator Jordan Youngberg is a prime sponsor of the legislation in the senate. He says he’s heard a lot of interest from farmers to grow hemp. But he says he doesn’t envision a lot of production in the beginning.

State lawmakers are moving forward with a funding mechanism to prop up an industrial hemp program in South Dakota--should the legislation pass.

It’s a separate bill from establishing an industrial hemp program.

The bill’s prime sponsor of Democrat Representative Oren Lesmeister.

He says the bill gives the state Department of Ag $10-thousand to set up licenses for potential hemp growers.

Hemp Getting Roots In North Dakota Despite Drought

Some South Dakota farmers are watching closely as North Dakota brings in its second industrial hemp crop.

It’s a pilot program that South Dakota lawmakers have eyed in the past.

There was even a bill to create a hemp pilot program that stalled in the statehouse last year.
