Statistics show that 1 in every 4 deaths are related to heart disease. That's about 610,000 people annually. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in both men and women. Joining us to talk about this is the Prairie Doc, Dr. Richard Holm.

Peter Vitiello, Ph.D., an associate scientist in the Children’s Health Research Center at Sanford Research has developed a new model which could have lasting implications for some of the world’s most dangerous diseases like cancer, diabetes, and heart disease. Dr. Vitiello is a member of the Society for Redox Biology and Medicine. It's an international organization of 1,200 scientists, investigators and clinicians who conduct research in the area of redox biology as well as oxidants and antioxidants.

American Heart Association

Wednesday is National Eating Healthy Day. The American Heart Association wants to encourage families to focus on eating healthy for a day to build good habits.

The department of health wants to get more people walking.  Mobridge and Keystone are the latest towns receiving grants to access the walkability of sidewalks and streets.

Linda Ahrendt is the chronic disease director at the department of health.  She says exercising just 22 minutes daily significantly reduces the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
